It was firewood.

Twisted offcuts. Slabs too stubborn to be useful, too scarred to be sold. The kind of wood that ends up in a pile and stays there.

I pulled it out.

The split doesn’t get filled here. It gets stitched — leather cord pulled through both sides, tied off at the top, tails left hanging. A wound made visible is a wound made permanent. That’s not a flaw. That’s the work.

Hand-carved legs. Each one marked by the process. Each one through something.

Cute ugly. Her words. The right words.

Not everyone deserves ugly this good.
