OKAR
and the Itsuwa
Some timber arrives already split. The rift running through OKAR was in the camphor laurel long before it reached the studio. The whole work grew around that wound.
OKAR is a world carved into a single slab. Above the rift, three brothers once held the sky: Haku, Tate and Yoko, divine, jealous and magnificent, failing in ways that feel very human. Haku left, and his leaving gave the other two the balance to call and answer. In the dark below lives the Naki, bat-creatures whose hum quietly and permanently changes whoever hears it. The Naki treat this as a lesson, not a curse. At the edge of the rift waits Mahgol, haloed in gold, their exiled king.
The piece was two and a half years in the making, through many versions and many late nights. The surface is charred using shou sugi ban, tinted in layers, and hand carved, with brass and copper running through it. The lower disc is part of the work and hangs separately.
OKAR is not wall art. It is a legend that one home or property will own outright. It comes with the Itsuwa, a private book that holds the rest of the story. The Itsuwa is made once and delivered physically to the collector alone. It is not published or reproduced, and it is never shown anywhere else.
